As wonderful parents, you have the obligation to set healthy standards for good oral hygiene in your children. Preparing them for proper dental hygiene will ensure that they will have a pleasant experience whenever they visit the dentist.

To help you prepare your child for better oral health, cites some of the most common dental problems you need to watch out for.

A child who doesn’t want to brush or floss

Some kids are rather uncooperative with brushing their teeth, unlike others. On the other hand, some parents may not even practice the habit themselves, which might be the reason a child doesn’t realize how important it is to brush or floss their teeth.

According to Young Parents, you should teach your kids to brush their teeth once their first teeth emerge. Parents are not encouraged to wait until the child is three or four years because it may be too difficult for them to change their child’s behavior.

Thumb sucking

While it’s common to see infants sucking their thumbs, pacifiers, fingers, or toys, but it can have a permanent effect on their teeth. Depending on the frequency, duration, and intensity of thumb sucking, your child’s teeth may be pushed out of its alignment, which may cause it to protrude and even create an overbite. You must encourage them not to suck their thumb through positive reinforcement.

Lip sucking

Another behavior that may cause damage to your child’s teeth is lip sucking. This habit also creates an overbite and has the same effects as with tongue thrusting and thumb sucking.

These are just some of the most common problems that you need to know, so you can take care of your child’s oral health. Keep in mind that aside from their hygiene, certain behaviors such as thumb sucking can also affect their teeth. So, it’s always best to check on them and see how they’re doing so that you’ll know if they’re under stress or not.
