In the past, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiac diseases were in the only lifestyle diseases. One of the most serious and yet often ignored new conditions is COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).COPD refers to a group of conditions that make it hard to breathe by impeding pulmonary airflow.

Cigarette smoke is currently the primary risk factor for COPD, but genetics and toxic fumes also play a role in its development. There are various management options for COPD at long-term acute care (LTAC) hospitals such as Landmark Hospital Salt Lake City though there is no known cure. Here are some of these options:

Medications

These are aimed at opening constricted airways to ease airflow, reducing swelling and irritation of your airways and treating any infection. Bronchodilators, antibiotics, and corticosteroids are some of the medications used to achieve these objectives. Your doctor might also prescribe opioids for pain relief and nicotine replacement therapies to help you quit tobacco smoking.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

This is aimed at ensuring that you have enough oxygen since COPD interferes with your breathing ability. Your doctor might prescribe several portable devices for the delivery of oxygen when sleeping or engaging in strenuous activities. Psychological counseling and meditation also form part of pulmonary rehabilitation since stress increases your oxygen requirement and puts a strain on your lungs.

Surgery

This is recommended in severe COPD. The three common types of surgical interventions include bullectomy, LVRS (lung volume reduction surgery) and lung transplant. These surgeries remove damaged lung tissues and in the case of an operation, replace them with healthy ones.

The given management options will only be efficient with some lifestyle changes on your part. Exercise and eating healthy meal portions will strengthen your pulmonary muscles and reduce stress on them, hence easing your breathing. Smoking cessation and avoidance of secondhand smoke are vital for preventing COPD.
