Trying to stop yourself from overeating or gaining weight is not just a matter of willpower. In some cases, what sabotages your efforts are the daily eating habits you choose to ignore or not care about. You may not realize it, but the eating habits you have become so accustomed to may be the culprit why you are wreaking havoc on your health and not losing weight.

You don’t focus on your food

Eating while doing something else (e.g. working, watching a video, or surfing the Web) puts you at risk of overeating or gobbling more food than what you should. Studies suggest that a distracted brain causes you to consume more calories to achieve satiety. Mindful eating, on the other hand, can reduce your calorie intake.

You skip meals

Skipping meals can do more than just decrease your energy levels; it can also cause you to overeat later in the day. The same is also true for sticking with eating only salad at lunch. If you truly love salads, make sure they contain some lean sources of protein like fish or grilled chicken to help you feel fuller.

You always supersize your meal

Supersizing every time you order means that you’ll have bigger servings or more food in front you. This, however, also means you will have to eat more to finish everything. To avoid overeating, just order a regular meal size or what you need.

Eating because you’re bored

Sometimes, it’s tempting to grab something to eat when you’re bored. Before doing so, stop and assess if you’re truly hungry. If you feel the need to eat because you’re doing nothing, find some distractions like reading a book, chewing on gum, or taking a walk.

Depriving yourself

You don’t have to stop eating your favorite food even when you’re on a diet. The key is moderation or enjoying them occasionally. You can also balance out your choices or choose healthier versions of your favorite snacks.

Take note of these bad eating habits and try your best to break them. You should also include getting adequate sleep every night, exercising most days of the week, and managing stress and anxiety. You might also want to consider talking to a dietician or a family doctor for developing better eating habits.
