Going through depression is difficult. There are several clinical research organizations in the USA that believe one in every four Americans are diagnosed with major depression at one point in their lives.
Although there’s no immediate medication or treatment to overcome depression, here are several tips on how to manage it.
1. Stay connected
Getting social support is important to overcome depression. However, a person who’s suffering from depression often finds it difficult to reach out to other people. But staying connected with other people will make a difference in your mood and your overall outlook on life.
2. Engage in activities that make you feel good
Although you can’t make yourself enjoy things, you can at least push yourself to be active even when you don’t feel like doing it. You might feel great about it once you’ve started doing all the things that you used to enjoy.
Expect that you won’t get rid of depression right away, but you’ll gradually feel more energetic if you engage in fun activities.
3. Do some physical exercise
One way to fight depression is through exercise. Research shows that it also helps prevent any relapse as soon as you’re well. You don’t have to force yourself to hit the gym every day and stay there for hours. At least 30 minutes of exercise would suffice.
You can start with something easy and then gradually increase your activity to other forms of exercise.
The food that you eat also has an impact on your current emotional state. You may try reducing the intake of food that has adverse effects on your brain such as alcohol and transfat. Also, going too long between every meal can make you feel tired or even agitated. So try to at least eat something every four hours a day.
